Graduating from Alfred University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in glass in 1976, Weinberg earned his Masters of Fine Arts in glass from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1979 and quickly found himself part of a movement that was poised to establish a foothold on the art scene. Yet it was Weinberg himself who has made some of the greatest contributions to the world of cast glass; not only has his relentless vision created an exceptional body of work, he has personally developed some of the machines, techniques and processes that are now widely used in universities and studios around the world.
His current sculpture returns to the vessel as his poetic influence, incorporating his interest in found objects with his love for the literal and figurative sea. His Buoy Series starts with weather beaten fisherman's buoys found along the Rhode Island coast; Weinberg then casts them in colored crystal and finishes them with a solemn, metallic patina. As a related exploration, Weinberg's Hull Series reinterprets boat hulls in idealized crystal cross sections, juxtaposing the perfection of the exterior design with an interior elegy to the interface of air and water that is perfectly expressed through the strategic use of color, bubbles, veils and surface treatments. The crystal hulls, frozen in time, suggest a vessel that contains the very elements it attempts to traverse.
